Incorporating Intelligent CGF in a Human-in-the-Loop Simulation

The Air Operations Division (AOD) of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) has developed a range of simulation tools for Air Combat modelling. Two of these, the Air Operations Simulation Centre (AOSC) (which provides a facility for Human-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation), and the BattleModel (which provides intelligent Computer Generated Forces (CGFs)), are currently being integrated as a technology demonstrator. This will be the first integration of operationally credible Computer Generated Forces with a HiL facility in an air environment by DSTO. The Computer Generated Forces are being implemented using dMARS agent controlled fighter aircraft. Each pilot will be represented by an agent, and each aircraft will be represented by the pilot agent together with an associated physical model of the aircraft and its systems. The AOD BattleModel is being used as the supporting architecture for these agents and their associated physical models. Interaction with the AOSC will be achieved using Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). This paper describes the rationale for the technology demonstrator, the procedure being used to integrate the CGFs with the HiL facility, and the demonstration scenario that will be used to illustrate the application of the CGFs with the HiL.
